I've been reading a lot about how the moon should leave Earth's orbit. Well, before I even heard about Space 2099 a friend of mine and I discussed how Space:1999 could be rebooted, keeping as true to the original as possible, and still appeal to today's audience. The following is what I came up with.
Basically, a drive has been created to power the Meta probe. The drive is powered by anti-matter and creates essentially a wormhole. Well, the drive winds up running amok, opening a huge wormhole, drawing the moon into it. That, of course, takes care of the moon leaving Earth's orbit. The drive can't be shut down and activates a regular intervals propelling the moon through the wormhole. This would allow the moon to travel from planet to planet and slow down enough to explore them.
There's a lot more to the story I created than what I described above but that's the basics of it. I was nearly finished with my story before I hear of Space 2099 so I most likely won't finish it.

03-13-2012 04:08 PMI actually think this is close to what we'll see in the show. My only question is what prevents the Alphans from launching the Asmimov out into space away from the moon so they aren't subject to random jumps... unless the see these jumps as something beneficial.

03-13-2012 04:19 PMMy idea was that the Meta probe is actually located in a facility away from Alpha. The antimatter reactor is leaking threatening to destroy the moon. So the entire facility is encased in something I called "magnecrete" in my story. This would be dumped onto it by a fleet of Eagles. The leaking is stopped. However, the Alphans can't get to the drive now which is running uncontrolled.

love the idea of the new engine being the cause ofthe jump, as for the repeated jumps that could be due to the matter of moon etc becoming unstable the time between jumps becoming longer untill they stop, hopefully either the moon returns home or finds a new home out there..... somewhere!!

Meh, it's ok. I like the alien tech idea because of the additional "built-in" storylines and characters that can provide. And because it can tie into the whole "Mysterious Unknown Force" thing. I just think its a richer concept than either the original breakaway or what is being proposed here.
I don't hate this idea, I just like mine better...lol!!

06-21-2012 05:05 PMIt seemed to me that an alien drive system was found on the moon and was reverse engineered to produce the Eagles, artifical gravity, high densisty metals, force fields based on gravity control, first generation FTL drives, ect. Something happens to that device and it is triggered because no one knew the control layout adequately and mistake or terrorist sabotagge gets it going.

06-25-2012 02:33 PMI think that the alien devices were there for a reason, for eventual recovery by humans when spaceflight tech had colonized the moon. There would be several devices and they would generate a gravity based force field around the moon for what purpose? Fill in the blank but it was intentional. Borrowing from Star Trek, the screen could lower the moons apparent weight or mass to allow a drive to move it. The drive could be an integral part of the devices or the devices ability to generate and manipulate gravity allows both defense and propulsion. Steering would not be easy as the kidnapped humans would have to learn alot befoe they could control the drive which is FTL capable. Enough knowledge would be had to change Earth space tech, producing FTL capable space craft though of limited range. I have some inspiration from Stargate: Universe where the humans are unwilling passengers on a giant starship pursuing it's own agenda and without a hacking of the computer after breaking the computer codes, a measure of control.

I would like the back story to be. When humans came back to the moon in the 2020's they set up a small base and started to explore, after awhile they found, just by chance, a plate under the moon dust, with a strange inscription. When they started examining the area, they found that the plate, of an unknown impenetrable metal extended several hundred meters in every direction. They also found out that this metal enhanced radio communication with the Earth, and also gave of an electrical charge that could be used to power a larger human presence on the moon. The Alpha moonbase was then relocated to the area near this plate. Years went by, while scientist found even more remarkable properties of the metal plate, which they by now knew was a cube inserted into the moon, but were unable to penetrate it. Until a brilliant young scientist managed to understand the inscriptions (Victor Bergman). The inscription was instructions on how to open the metal cube. A special expedition put together by the United Nations, consisting of Earth's top scientists in several fields, and led by Commander Koenig was put to the task of opening the cube and excavate the contents. When they did open it a wormhole was opened swallowing the moon and hurtling it towards the unknown....
However they find out after awhile that the wormhole travel repeats at regular intervals. The alien artifact should be so far above any human knowledge that they have no way of understanding how it work... but after coming into contact with many alien races, they learn enough to start beginning to understand it. It should not be a matter of plugging in your mac or pc, and then changing the code... or blasting it from the moon which should be impossible, or dropping an a-bomb into the interior, since it is made of, to human tech, impregnable metal....no easy way out please!
