In my opinion, the time is ripe for this new series. There is no current Star Trek series, Stargate has been cancelled with little hope of bringing that franchise back any time soon, you still have an enthusiastic fan base from Firefly / Serenity, and the fan base for Battlestar Galactica is waiting for a place to go as well.
Space 1999 was one of the first true "Space Operas" on TV. As one of the oldest shows to build from, this gives you a "lever to move the world" so to speak. The opportunity to capture a large fan base and hold onto it through many series of Space 2099 is there. But you need to execute.
You need to capture all of these fan bases and carve out a "crossover" fan base as well. With the lack of a CURRENT epic science fiction show, there never has been a better time to swing for the fences with Space 2099.
So to Jace and the Space 2099 Team: "Get R Done!"

I agree. There is a void that needs filling, and with an engaging storyline, pretty visuals, a solid cast and a small scattering of A-list actors (guests? permanent cast?) to draw people in, it could be a real goer. Plausibility would also have to be important, and care would have to be taken not to alienate 1999 fans.
Quite. Strike while the iron is hot, or you run the possibility of losing the opportunity.Space 1999 was one of the first true "Space Operas" on TV.
