SPACE: 2099 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Ok. What the HECK is going on? What is the point of this site? What are you people doing? IS THIS ACTUALLY REAL OR IS IT SOME FAN THING???
----------
A: Yes, this is REAL and not a fan created project. We (HDFILMS) are developing a full series project with ITV called SPACE: 2099. We have been working on it for quite some time.
This Space2099TheSeries.com community website has been made available to promote and discuss the show directly with fans as we build and develop it. We believe that it is important to engage our intended audience directly from day one so that we are able to listen and consider the desires of the people we are trying to serve. This is a very different approach when compared to a typical Hollywood-style production. Normally, for a project of this scale, a company would have everything completely nailed down and be close to launching its series before they ever directly let fans participate – which of course is simply too late.
As the series gets closer to completion, so shall you bear witness. We are going to be visualizing events in a plausible world and universe set in the year 2099 A.D. and there is plenty to discuss and debate about it. We will endeavor to provide as much information as we possibly can without ruining or exposing the actual story so that when you do finally get to see the end result there are plenty of great surprises.
You will notice that in our main page’s news feed, not only do we provide updates on the Space: 2099 project but we also report on things happening in our world today that may be relevant in the year 2099 A.D. We encourage you to pay close attention to these news updates as they may provide clues as to what may be in store for you when you see the Space: 2099 series.
We hope for you to engage with us on this site actively and be part of the overall effort. Jace Hall is our Executive Producer and Creative lead – and you will have direct access to him here!

Q: SPACE 2099!!! I’m excited, what’s the story about?
A: We are not releasing specific story information yet- but plan to at the right time.
----------
Q: Is Space: 2099 a remake, continuation, or extension of Space:1999?
A: Space: 2099 is a “re-imagining” of the franchise. What this means is that while there will be some familiar elements from Space:1999, Space: 2099 represents a new vision and encapsulation of the intentions and key axioms that made Space: 1999 so unique and wonderful. Our intention is not to alter, replace, or negate the original Space:1999 series is any way – but to simply bring something thoughtful and new to audiences that align with the overall fundamental story-telling intention of the Space:1999 franchise in general.
----------
Q: What Space:1999 elements, if any, are guaranteed to be a part of the new Space: 2099 series?
A: While we can’t go into detail at this time what we can say is that there are 3 key axioms that Space: 1999 presented that we have identified as critical to our new vision.
----------
- The true sense of fear, awe and discovery when dealing with the unknown – particularly the final frontier that is the wide-open universe.
- The human experience existing at extreme disadvantage being a driving force in the cooperation of disparate interests and agendas for the purposes of survival. To realize that all we have is each other.
- The very real near-future plausibility of the technology depicted; its practical design, use and impact on how people interact with each other and accomplish tasks.
Q: Are there any overall guidelines in Space:2099 that are being particularly focused on?
A: Yes. Plausibility. Plausibility of everything. From the technology used, to how people would realistically behave under certain circumstances. In fact, the way we plan to shoot the series for “look and feel” takes into account as much “realness” as possible. We want to engage and immerse the audience as much as possible, so that they will regularly feel “that could happen” or “that’s what I would do.” Keeping things very real, relevant and relatable will help us in that endeavor.
----------
Q: Will the original characters from Space: 1999 be in this new series and are you thinking about using any of the original actors from Space:1999?
A: Great question! Not answering it yet! Stay tuned!
----------
Q: How is it to work with ITV?
A: ITV has been (and is) incredibly supportive of this new Space:2099 project and they are all charming people to work with. They are just as excited about the project as we are and we continue to work closely with them every day to bring the show into reality. It has been through their support that this project has become possible so please feel free to give your local ITV representative a positive nod when you see them.
----------
Q: What does Gerry Anderson think of all this?
A: We can't speak for Gerry in any way so you would need to ask him! Gerry is a great visionary himself and it is an honor to be involved with anything that he has touched.
----------
Q: I'm curious about your sensibilities. What do you consider to be good science fiction?
A: This is a very broad question and there are numerous variables to consider such as what kind of mood a person is in, or do you want action or drama, etc.
However, with that being said we would like to give some insight...
Generally speaking we enjoy science fiction that gives the audience something to ponder or at the very least provides an interesting perspective / comment on the human condition. Stories like GATTACA, MOON, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, ALIEN, DISTRICT 9, 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, THE MATRIX and BLADE RUNNER are the kinds of things that excite us.
----------
Q: Will there be new models/toys/collectibles for the Space: 2099 series?
A: We can’t answer this just yet!
----------
Q: When is the Space: 2099 series going to be released???!!!
A: When it’s done.
----------
Q: No, seriously, when is the Space: 2099 series going to be released.
A: No, seriously, when it’s done. The focus here is on creating a quality execution, and when we collectively feel that it is ready, the series will be unleashed! We encourage you to visit this site often and participate because we promise if you do that you will get a good sense of when the series is likely to release!
----------
Q: Do you understand that we are excited but protective, skeptical but curious and want this to be awesome but are very nervous that you are going to mess this up??? We have waited a long time for something like this and the current state of science fiction in the market place has not given us a lot of hope. Do you understand what we are saying? DON’T SCREW THIS UP!
A: Yes, we completely understand and feel the same way as you do. Obviously we recognize the opportunity here and hopefully you view our early outreach to the fans as a good sign that we are being as thoughtful as possible when working on this franchise. We want nothing more than to make something amazing, and while we know it will be impossible to please everybody, we are certainly going to do our best. Our feeling is that an active conversation with our audience will help us ensure that we deliver on the vision.
More questions and answers will be added here so please check back often!

I would like to ask, how far along is the project's development? When will it be ready to sell to an exhibitor who can green light the production phase?

02-13-2012 02:50 AMConfronting fan expectations like this is a brave step, and a hopeful one. Also you listed all the right influences (2001, Moon, etc.)
As for me, I'm a fan of certain elements of the original show, specifically the "sense of wonder" in the first season, and the depiction of the space technology, Eagles and all that stuff. Year 2? Doesn't exist.
So hopefully I'm your audience for this. Open to seeing a new approach, but eager to retain elements that worked originally.
It'll be an interesting ride.

02-13-2012 07:22 AMI look forward to speculation on how to propel the Moon (1/81st of Earth's mass) at faster than light speeds! I do remember reading a Mars story which ended with Mars going FTL (Rainbow Mars?).

Okay...found this place...work had to stop to check this out. So, I saw the posters, read all the material. Gotta say, I think everyone is jumping thru hoops that might not be there. The poster showing the Eagle and the moon in the distance may not be the deck of the ship leaving the moon. It may be a prespective of a station in orbit around the Earth, watching the moon pull away, or...it's the jumping point for shuttles to the moon. All in all, the Moon is the focus point of the series, and the poster. I simply can not believe they would Star Trek this series.

Honestly, I think we are making a mountain out of a molehill. This poster showing the half Moon is just poetic license. It's the launch pad on the Moon AND we see the Moon in the background. Movie posters do that stuff all the time.
Jace is not telling us any details about anything, really, as any good publicist should. If ITV really has had many pitches about this and have turned them down all except for his, then perhaps we should just trust that he is going to plausibly get the Moon out of Earth orbit and turn it into a vehicle of sorts.
He's figured out a way to have the proverbial cake and eat it, too.
I hope.

02-13-2012 08:47 PMDefinitely disagree on Season 2. It had it's moments including some very good episodes. But the thing it added was a sense of humanity, the characters could actually interact with each other, show emotions and might I say they were alot less wooden than they were in season 1. I think there needs to be a good mix of season 1 and 2 in the reboot. I realize that there are three different camps, those that prefer season 1, those that prefer season 2 and of course those that appreciate both seasons for what they were.
